To everyone here at the Iconfactory, the World of Copland collections are like old friends. Every time we start a new volume, there is a certain creative spark that goes around the factory floor. We end up brainstorming really neat ideas, and get excited about cranking out more icons at that familiar 3D angle. This time around was no exception. The difference was that we were in uncharted waters since we knew that we wanted WOC:4 to be Mac OS 8.5 savvy. Being the awesome programmer that he is, Craig created a make-shift Photoshop filter called IconBuilder, and after some initial rough edges with the filter, we managed to get to the point where we actually had a clue about how to make these new icons. What has resulted is just the first of many icon sets for Mac OS 8.5. The quality and effects that can be achieved with this new icon format are impressive, and we hope you enjoy our initial efforts with this new, exciting medium.
The enclosed folder contains 45 icons based on the now infamous and defunct Mac OS code named Copland. Probably the most memorable thing about Copland was the distinctive 3D look of the interface's icons. World of Copland:4 picks up right where the past three sets have left off, but this time the icons have taken advantage of the smooth blends, transparent masks and almost limitless colors of Mac OS 8.5. Included in this volume are Copland versions of some of your favorite foods like Cheeseburgers, Hot dogs and Submarine sandwiches. Techies will appreciate the wide selection of all new computer and hi-tech gadgets like Sony Cam corders, Cell Phones, Printers, and all new Quick-cam, modems and digital cameras. WOC:4 is proud to be the first to offer 32 bit versions of the new iMac Computer as well as several of its peripherals like Imation's new SuperDisk Drive and the iMac mouse itself. Lastly, hook up your boring old removable media with some super-cool translucent Imation Diskette icons, complete with colored shadows! All these and more in the Iconfactory's latest round of World of Copland: Volume 4. Enjoy!

Important Notes About Copying & Pasting 8.5 Icons
In Mac OS 8.5, there are two types of custom icons you can use: old-style with only 256 colors and the new style with 32-bit icons. The Finder only copies and pastes the new style. This is a more efficient use of disk space.
However, if you paste the Mac OS 8.5 icon on removable media, such as a floppy or Zip disk, the icon won't show up when you move to an older version of the OS. You'll also have problems on a network server and an older client Mac.
By default, the Iconfactory's IconDropper 3.2 utility pastes both kinds of icons so they will show up on any version of the OS that supports custom icons. To learn more about IconDropper 3.2, please visit the Iconfactory at <http://www.iconfactory.com> Thanks!
How To make Use of WOC:4 as Mac Icons:
1. You need system 7 or higher.
2. Do a "Get Info" (File menu) on the original WOC icon file that you want to use.
3. Click on the icon in the window; choose "Copy" (Edit menu).
4. Close the window, then "Get Info" on destination file/disk.
5. Click on the icon, choose "Paste" (Edit menu).

On replacing the trash icon:
Many people ask us how to go about replacing their Mac's trash icon with a custom one. There are several ways to go about replacing the trash icon, but we don't recommend messing around with system resources unless you are fairly versed with ResEdit. If you're not sure you want to mess with the guts of your Mac's system files then may we recommend a program called Zonkers! from Nova Development. Zonkers provides users with a safe, fast and easy way to customize ALL system level icons with the click of a mouse (unless you're running Mac OS 8).
